Think back. . . remember the good old days when your grandparents or maybe even your parents had a comfortable lifestyle, possibly on just a single income. They had it all – health, home, guaranteed social security, car (or horse & buggy) and possibly TV, phone, radio, secure job. . . They seemed so much happier and had far fewer worries than we do.
( Objects appear larger in the rear view mirror.)
How'd they do it? Why do we have so many "money" troubles today? Especially since we make so much more than they did. Or do we?
We're more "civilized" and have more of everything, right? We're more productive. We even have mobile phones that tag along with us, computers too, the Internet, digital TV and all sorts of newfangled, high tech and low tech gadgets to help us.
But that's the problem! Too much of a good thing. We've literally become fat, lazy and complacent. And we have more needs! We're more materialistic, self-indulgent and are exposed to more (yes, there's more to buy!). We've become a global village of binge buyers (subprime crisis).
Speed kills.
Just a thought. . . memory is a thing of the past. Computers, phones, PDAs, the Internet and even books remember everything for us. So why think? Let technology do it for you.
The problem: The mind becomes flabby when not in use. So use it or lose it!
Today, everything is disposable – cameras, credit cards, contact lenses, phones, knees, hips and even our heroes. No more dishes, just wrap the trash up in the paper, plastic or foil it came in and junk it.
Obesity anyone? We eat fast food. We can zap food in a microwave, instantly. Oh, and everything is grown a lot faster too with growth hormones, antibiotics, breeding, cloning. . . (sometimes in inhumane settings). But where's the nutrition?
Some companies have tried to address the nutrition deficient disorder (NDD) by offering organic and whole grain products. Others are adding all sorts of vitamins, minerals and supplements such as folic acid, omega 3 and ginseng. For some, it's just a marketing gimmick; for others, it's a step in the right direction. Time will tell.
Attention spans shrink and ADHD rules. We live on Internet time (life at the speed of thought), 24/7. And it comes with a steep learning curve that requires continuous learning and frequent upgrades and updates. Life 2.0.
Electricity, planes, trains and automobiles. Where were they in 1492, 1776, the 1800s, 1900 or 5000 BC (they had pyramids then)? The world has come a long way quickly. More to come. . . Who would have thought a gallon of water would cost more than a gallon of gas?
So with all that we have today, where does that leave us? If life is too complicated, simplify it now!
Note: The tragic events of Hurricane Katrina and September 11, 2001 remind us just how precious life is. Living a simple life is more important than ever now. Just do it! Live. Give back to society. Simplify your life.
Less is more. Downscale and raise the quality of your life. Shun excess.
